QScience initially constisted of a reshuffling of the EconoPhysics Forum, a web-based publication created by Fribourg University in 1998. The EconoPhysics Forum has served as a platform for the exchange of ideas between its community members and as a website gathering online publications for interdisciplinary and complex sciences. However, it lacked IT upgrades which compromised its appeal to users.

The QScience distribution is developed in Drupal (http://drupal.org), a powerful, open source content management system for the web. Distributions are full copies of Drupal that include Drupal Core, along with additional software such as themes, modules, libraries, and installation profiles (see https://drupal.org/documentation/build/distributions).

The QScience distribution integrates a set of Drupal modules developed with the purpose of supporting scientific activities (such as PDF Parser, VisualScience, QTR, etc.), automatically solves all the dependencies, and offers an easy an intuitive installation process.

The distribution has been contributed to Drupal.org (drupal.org/project/qscience_profile) and a user manual is available.
